Watercolours from Europe 2012

I thought I would take a break from the Charcoal work for this post and introduce a little colour to my blog by sharing this short slideshow of Watercolour pieces taken from one of my Europe sketchbooks. These works were created whilst on a long holiday in Europe through the summer of 2012. All the works on the slide are of the Spanish and French Pyrenees except 'Pierre's Roses' which was painted in Limousin.

The Pyrenean mountain range, along with the various National Parks that stretch out between and beyond snow capped peaks, is one of the most wonderful and deeply impressive places I have travelled in. From a visual point of view I was particularly taken with the weather on the French side, and the way in which the mountains were constantly interacting with the clouds and mist that can come down at a moments notice. The view is constantly in flux and as a result your impression of your surroundings changes from one moment to the next. In terms of practicality, using watercolours when sketching and drawing in this area seemed a natural choice as the immediacy of the medium helps to capture these fleeting scenes.

You can see some more Europe drawings in A Europe Sketchbook.

In my next post there will be some very exciting exhibition news, so stay in touch!
